Climate Concert

On May 24th, the Staatskapelle Berlin will play their tenth climate concert with “Die Weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü” in the Berlin power station. Additionally, June 9th marks the beginning of the new Sustainable Listening series in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

The musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have been committed to climate and environmental protection for more than a decade. Numerous projects have already grown out of their “Orchestra of Change” initiative, and many other instrumentalists and ensembles from all over Germany have now joined.

For their tenth climate concert, the musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin will play at a place in Berlin's industrial history on May 24th: The Berlin power plant. For a long time it provided people with warmth, but today it is an overwhelming space in whose tangible energy the artists of the Staatskapelle together with the conductor Frank Strobel perform “Die Weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü” (Germany 1929), a film concert drama with music by Ashley Irwin and a cinematic and musically impressive excursion into fascinating glacier landscapes that are severely threatened and even disappeared.

The proceeds of the concert benefit the activities of the Orchestra of Change Germany, as well as projects in cooperation with the WWF and the Madagascar project which is committed to reforestation in the Masoala National Park. In addition to native woods, various exotic woods are used for many instruments, some of which are threatened with extinction. Protecting the existence of these woods and their ecosystems is particularly important to the musicians.

In addition, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden invites you to the Apollosaal on June 9th for the new discourse and concert performance series "Sustainable Listening," which is dedicated to climate and environmental issues - a space for conversation, exchange, and participation with climate experts, activists, and visionaries in the form of lectures, talks and short films on various sustainability topics.

The core of the new series is concert performance: music played by musicians from the Staatskapelle Berlin, who are involved in the Orchestra of Change, merges with live electronics by the Teichmann brothers and with text contributions by the invited marine expert Anja Engel.
