Barenboim’s Birthday Concert Benefited Freelance Musicians

András Schiff, Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin are supporting freelance musicians who are particularly suffering from the current crisis with their performance on November 15th. The proceeds go to the emergency aid fund of the German Orchestra Foundation.

The program includes Ludwig van Beethoven's 4th piano concerto and "Eroica," his symphony No. 3.

Congratulations! Matthias Schulz will continue as Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden

The Board of Trustees of the Berlin Opera Foundation has approved the contract extension of Matthias Schulz as director of the Berlin Staatsoper, meaning Matthias Schulz will manage Haus Unter den Linden for another four years.

Matthias Schulz has been with the Staatsoper since March 2016, initially as co-director alongside Jürgen Flimm starting in September 2017. Since April 2018 he’s had sole responsibility as director. For the opera house, the contract extension is a signal of the greatest possible continuity and stability amid these challenging times.

The Senator for Culture and Europe and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Klaus Lederer, says:

“After the long renovation phase of the Unter den Linden house, Matthias Schulz successfully helped to move the Staatsoper back to its headquarters, and through the associated repositioning of the opera house in the international music scene. I am therefore personally very happy that I was able to win Matthias Schulz for an extension and that he is now staying for four more years. I am convinced that he is the right person to continue to lead the State Opera with skill and the necessary foresight.”
