Antonio Vivaldi's IL GIUSTINO

Antonio Vivaldi's IL GIUSTINO, directed by Barbora Horáková, will premiere on November 20, 2022. The director is making her house debut. The Academy for Early Music Berlin is playing under the musical direction of René Jacobs.

For the first time ever, an opera by this well-known and influential composer of the Baroque period can be experienced at the State Opera. The 1920s saw the extraordinary rediscovery of a large number of Vivaldi's operas, which shed new light on Vivaldi's work, including Il Giustino, an opera about the rise of the young peasant Giustino to the forefront of Roman politics in which not only Byzantine heroines but also bears, sea monsters and voices speaking from graves have their say.

The baroque specialist René Jacobs has developed a new version for the new production, which will premiere as part of the BAROCKTAGE 2022. In the production by Barbora Horáková, the opera becomes a refreshingly virtuoso stage spectacle full of imagination, pointed humor and lightness.

The ensemble includes Raffaele Pe (Anastasio), Kateryna Kasper (Arianna), Christophe Dumaux (Giustino), Robin Johannsen (Leocasta), Siyabonga Maqungo (Vitaliano), Helena Rasker (Andronico), Olivia Vermeulen (Amanzio, Fortuna) and Magnus Dietrich ( policy type). The State Opera Choir sings, rehearsed by Gerhard Polifka. Thilo Ullrich is responsible for the stage design, Eva-Maria Van Acker designed the costumes and Sascha Zauner designed the lighting.
